Auburn Hills, MI – April 17, 2013 – Patti Engineering, Inc., a leader in control systems integration, today announced its continuing support for the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). The annual competition brings together thousands of bright young students to compete in organized teams. Practicing engineers donate their time and expertise to help these teams as they are challenged to think, create and compete as they design and build the robots.

Teams that join First Robotics experience the excitement of sport coupled with the rigors of science and technology. With strict rules, time constraints and limited resources, teams are tasked with raising funds, designing a brand and honing effective teamwork skills. Teams build and program their robots to perform pre-determined tasks with the support of mentors who volunteer their time and talent. In 2013, Patti Engineering is supporting six teams from Team 302 Lake Orion Dragons, Team 2137 Oxford TORC, Team 33 Notre Dame Prep Killer Bees, Teams 70/494 Goodrich Martians and Team 4743 - Royal Oak Steam Engine.

Team 302 – Dragons, Lake Orion High School

Founded in 1989, FIRST promotes youth interest in science and technology. Its mission is to inspire and grow younger generations into science and technology leaders through engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs to build science, engineering and technology skills. “More than $16 million dollars in scholarship money is available, exemplifying FIRST and our industry’s true dedication to helping shape young professionals,” commented Ken Kutchek, vice president of operations at Patti Engineering.

Team 2137 - TORC, Oxford High School

“From all of us at Patti Engineering, we would like to congratulate the six teams we sponsored for their hard work and impressive performances. We are proud to say that four of our teams, Team 2137 Oxford TORC, Team 33 Notre Dame Prep Killer Bees, Teams 70/494 Goodrich earned spots in the state finals which took place last week,” said Sam Hoff, president of Patti Engineering.

Organized by the Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD), the Michigan Regional Future City Competition is a program where sixth, seventh and eighth grade students, a teacher and volunteer mentors team up to design a city of the future. With the theme, “Rethink Runoff: Design Clean Solutions to Manage Stormwater Pollution,” each design must encompass plans for infrastructure, transportation and communication systems, as well as, power plants, industrial, commercial and residential settings.

Patti Engineering sent a team of engineers to the ESD Regional Future City Competition on January 28 in Novi, MI, where they reviewed projects from teams who developed a plan and executed their designs with a budget of $100 using virtual cities in SimCity 4 software (donated by Electronic Arts). Each team was responsible for conducting their own research and writing solutions to an engineering problem and a narrative describing their city. At the completion of each city design, teams presented their creation and ideas to a panel of judges.

While the Patti Engineering judges were pleased with all of the teams’ creations, they awarded the MacArthur K-8 University Academy from Southfield, MI the “Best Use of Automation Technology” award for their innovative underground city concept, which allowed the planet’s surface to remain in a natural state while the structure of the city was built beneath the earth’s surface. Their design included an automated scoop transport system; control systems for light, air quality and water systems; natural light distribution; an automated food and water delivery concept; water control system for substance and power; thermal heating; and an inventive zero waste reclaiming design.

“It is important to support youth in Michigan, and across the nation, as they excel in the areas of math, science and engineering. Our team of judges bestowed the ‘Best Use of Automation Technology’ award upon students from MacArthur University Academy for their demonstration of innovative and complex thinking to create their concept for an underground city,” said Sam Hoff, president of Patti Engineering. “The Future City competition exemplifies a superior learning process for students where they identify problems, engage and work with team members, design solutions and test them until results can be presented.”

Drought/deluge cycles lead to increased flooding and polluted water systems. Whether the result of man-made climate change or something else as yet unexplained, most people agree that extreme weather is becoming all too common. When it’s colder in May than in February, or when the season’s biggest snowstorm comes in October, you know something unusual is upon us.

One of the most potentially damaging aspects of extreme weather is radical swings in precipitation. Regions throughout the world find themselves experiencing prolonged drought, then are suddenly hit with torrential storms. When this happens, rainwater quickly turns into runoff, especially in cities, where hard surfaces—like roofs, sidewalks, and parking lots—prevent rain from soaking into the ground and leads to damaging and sometimes catastrophic flooding.

Until now, the most common response has been to channel water away from urban areas. But, as it moves, runoff carries pollutants into storm drains which empty directly into the waterways used for recreation, fishing and drinking water. Now engineers are rethinking this approach. They are beginning to imagine and design new and creative ways to manage stormwater that make city landscapes act more like natural landscapes. These innovations help reduce runoff, increase the amount of water that soaks into the ground and improve water quality.

With this critical issue topping the news all across the country, National Engineers Week Foundation’s annual Future City® Competition essay theme for its 2012-13 challenge is: Rethink Runoff: Design Clean Solutions to Manage Stormwater Pollution. The annual Future City Competition is for sixth, seventh and eighth grade students; a program designed to inspire students’ interest in engineering. Student teams plan and design virtual cities with SimCity 4 software (donated each by Electronic Arts), build physical models with recycled materials and a budget of just $100, research and write a solution to an engineering problem, write a narrative describing their city, and present their ideas before a panel of judges.

Our Engineers our judging the Engineering Society of Detroit’s (ESD) Michigan Regional Future City Competition today, we will update you with the creative ideas we are sure to encounter. We will be awarding the Patti Engineering sponsored ‘Best Use of Automation Technology’ award.
